Sorry about being abit tardy with updating my blog this week. S and I have been playing so much frisbee these days that i'm zapped most days! Yes, even Border Collies get tired, you know?
It may come as a surprise to many, but yes, i have a faithful bunny reader (no, i'm not the kind who'd eat my friends) named Lulu! I've always followed Lulu's mantra: "All lucky bunnies look abit round", up till recently when S decided that round bunnies are cute but round dogs aren't! Talk about being discriminating!! Anyway, when Lulu heard that i was looking for rescued animals to interview, she very gladly volunteered to share her story and I thought that was really courageous for a little bunny! Well i suppose her time in SPCA moulded her into a stronger bunny!
By the way, do you know that Lulu's human is currently studying in Perth, at the same university S went to? Perth is my homeland if you didn't know and i still remember so many friends that i made there, especially Shadow the Border Collie and Zeus the Ridgeback. Well i do know another Shadow (also a Border Collie) but that boy squeals even before i sniff him. Then there's a Ridgeback that i met at the hash.......er, i don't think he wants to befriend me though (feeling is mutual).
Okay okay, forgive me for sidetracking!!! I get carried away when i reminisce about childhood! Anyhoo, I now present my second guest interviewee - Lulu the Lop!
Hey sweetie, it's great to meet you for this exclusive interview. You smell reaaaaallly good! Kinda like rabbit stew or something.....*drools*. Anyway, if it's not too traumatic for you to recall, can you tell us why you were put up for adoption at the SPCA?
Lulu: The previous family bought me without knowing that i shed quite alot of fur (duh!). They had a child who had sinusitis and her condition was aggravated by me, not that i wanted that, of course. So they left me outside of their house 24/7, throwing me food and replacing water regularly, but without keeping me company. :( Also, the sun would shine into my wired cage from 8 am to 11am, and i did not have any respite from the sun.
That was why my M couldn't see the exact colour my fur when she first met me: i had two side patches of scorched, matted brown fur but the middle patch of fur was black and shiny. The SPCA volunteer then told her that house rabbits are not meant to survive under harsh weather elements and that my skin was slight;y sunburnt when my previous family put me up for adoption. and there wasn't any sunblock formulated for bunnies.... :(
When i was in SPCA, i was quite happy, cos my hutch, although a small one, was away from the harsh sun. It was nice and cool and sheltered there. I lived with this other bunny called fudge- she's an english Lop too.
Goodness me!!! Shame on those humans who put you through such a horrible experience!! GRRRRR. I HATE IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS! Thank Dog you met new humans to shower you with the TLC a lovely bunny like you deserves! So tell us when you met your new mummy and how did you react when you first saw her?
Lulu: I met my M last August. She went to SPCA with a friend of hers cos she wanted to adopt a rabbit instead of buying one. I didn't like her when i first saw her and she didn't like me very much too! HMMPH (i still bring that up when she scolds me for being naughty, emotional debt, HAHAHAHA).
You see, my M wanted a light coloured rabbit, and a regular non-lop one (cos lops are more expensive.) But she wanted to adopt the bunny that was left in SPCA for the longest time, and she knew that older bunnies seldom get adopted.(i'm slightly... mature, at 3 years old.) So she chose me. (I find it difficult to turn on my charm for people i don't know, you see. Shy la.)
When the volunteer carried me out and passed me to my M for a cuddle, i freaked out. I've never been handled before you see, and my skin was still slightly raw and painful from the sunburn. I kicked my hindlegs and scratched the neck of my M but according to my M, my eyes said :Take me, Love me!
So she went ahead and got me! :D
On the way home, in a taxi, i was placed in a carrier box. I was soooo frightened, cos i've never been in a box like this for such a long period of time! (30 minutes car ride is very long, ok.) i kept on scratching but M calmed me down by giving me nose rubs.
Awwwww. That's sweet of your mummy. I like nose rubs too (especially if your fingers smell like cheeseburgers or something!). Did you find it hard coping in your new home? Were you frightened at all or were you too happy to finally be able to leave the shelter? What do you enjoy most in your furever home now?
Lulu: I was so frightened when i first stepped into M's house. Grandfather was singing Karaoke and it was so noisy! On the other hand, i find it abit weird, cos i lived with dogs and cats in SPCA and the whole centre would be filled with their barking and meowing. M didn't have any cats or dogs in her house. :(
There was a huge cage, with water and lots of yummy grass and food prepared when i reached her home. M didn't buy a regular bunny cage for me, she bought me a dog crate, cos she said it's alot bigger and nicer to live in. (I'm a big big girl! :D) i went into the cage and shivered for 15 minutes.
M was outside the cage and couldn't bear to see me so frightened. So she placed me on her bed and she lied there like a dead log, not moving. I was fine with that, too many movements scare the weak heart of mine. I began to get curious cos the bed was so nice and soft- i've never touched such texture before! And M smelled nice too- she kkept on giving me nose rubs on the bed.
M's sister is the best! (she's my Small M.) She took over the nose-rubbing task when M felt tired. I thought : hmm, maybe it's a nice place to stay after all, i get lotsa nose rubs! i like!
My M said i played hard to get for the first week - i hate to be carried, but they had to do that to clean my cage. (they clean it twice a day, my M said i'm a silly bunny who refused to be toilet trained. HMMPH.) I was cold and indifferent to them at first.
But M and Small M were so patient with me! Before she got me, M began reading many many books about bunnies and she learnt that bunnies would lick people they like. So M brought me to the study room (the rooom with least chewing gum, oops, i mean WIRES) and lay down on the floor while i was free to roam around. I chose to go to her side and licked her arms, before cuddling beside her for an afternoon nap. M said she never felt any happier :)
Small M too! i love love love her! she would cuddle me on the bed before she sleeps every night. I would doze off for about an hour before she places me back to the cage to sleep. (She says i'll pee on her bed if she don't put me back to the cage, hmmph.) Grandma and Small M says i'm more like a puppy than a bunny - so manja! Grandma said she has never heard of a bunny who licks people and lie on their laps when she likes them. HEH! I'm such a precocious l'il one! :D
Wow, sounds like a perfect furever home for bunnies, puppies and kitties alike! Care to tell us what goes on a everyday in your bunny life?
Lulu: Well, I would wake up at 5.30 am and wait for my Small M to clean my cage before she goes to school. Then it;s time to nibble on grass and eat my breakfast of pellets from 7 am to 9 am. (i take some time to chew my pellets one, i'm a slow eater.) from 9 am to 1 pm, it's my morning nap. If i;m bored, i'd play with my chew toys or play pull-the-metal-tubing-out-of-the-water-bottle to irritate Small M when she comes back.
Small M will come back around 1-2 pm. She would make sure I've pee-ed lotsa times before she brings me to the study room for a roam and hop. I'd choose a nice cooling corner for another nap- this time my sleeping position would be very unfeminine. I don't care, HAHAHA!
Around 5 to 6 pm, Small M would bring me down to the field for some good ol' grass munching and fur brushing. (grandmomma forbids her from brushing the fur in the house cos my fur would dly everywhere.) Small M said itis my shedding season now - she thinks she can build another Lulu with the fur i shed. Excuse me, i want to be exclusive hor, plewase don't do that!
I'll be back at home by 7 pm, when Small M and grandma and will have their dinner. I'd have my dinner too- it;s 2 types of fresh greens for dinner. I'd have desserts (apples, pears..) thrice a week. YUM! i love desserts! apples are the best!
Then Small M would go back to her room to do her homework. This time, grandmomma would be the one entertaining me. She'd make sure i pee-ed first (SIGH, so troublesome), before placing me on the sofa. Then i would lie in her lap while she watches primtime TV. So boring! the people kept on crying and shouting and fighting! but never mind, Grandmomma gives me lotsa nose rubs, so i love spending time watching TV with her.
Grandmomma would sleep at 10 pm and i'd be back in my cage. Then Small M would take me out at 11 pm, her bedtime, and cuddle me till 12 plus before placing me back. Oh yes, i'm such a cute bunny because i would place my head on small M's arms - they're like pillows! So nice to sleep on!
Before you hop off to more grass munching, can you share with our readers some tips on caring for bunnies? And last but not least, any bunny-words of wisdom for people who intend to buy/adopt bunnies? (Pssssst, can you do some bunny-psycho on our readers to adopt a rescue animal, please?)
Lulu: Well, human beans, bunnies are NOT easy peasy pets to have. We're quite high-maintenance you know - you still need to change our cage very regularly. brush our fur often and take care of our diet.
My previous family bought me because i was 'cute' - they conveniently forgot that the 'cute' long fur they like needs to be regularly brushed!!! :( ( never mind, now my fur is quite nice already - can act in Pantene Shampoo ad, hahahhaa)
Lulu's M: Rabbits need a constant supply of hay too - timothy hay for older rabbits please, because alfalfa hay would cause chalky urine. Bad for bunnies' kidneys! And I heard from some silly owners that Rabbits should only be fed fresh greens once a week to prevent diarrhoea. It;s not true- they neeed fresh greens everyday- but bunnies who are not fed often will develop diarrhoea if you suddenly increase the frequency of greens. It's better to slowly increase their intake, not change their eating habits so suddenly.
Lulu (snatching the Mic from M): Yes, it;s Lulu here again. And please everyone: adopt instead of buying one from the pet shop! M found it silly to buy one from the pet shop when they are so many bunnies in SPCA that need to be rehomed. Who says older bunnies/ previously homed bunnies are not as affectionate? that's a big big misconception! I dare say i'm more manja than any bunnies i know.
So Human Beans of the world, for the Love of the Carrots and Apples, ADOPT! :D
- End of Interview -
Before Lulu left, she gave me lotsa nose kisses *blushes*. It was reaaaaal nice and romantic except for the fact that she had hay breath....hee hee! Ahh, i'm thinking of asking her out on a date to the field since she loves grass munching (i have recently developed an appetite for grass too!). Think she'll accept the invitation?

That's Lulu safe in her M's arms. :)
I'll like to thank Lulu for giving me a chance to interview her and Lulu's M for providing the lovely pictures. I'm sure bunnies of the world will rejoice for Lulu, knowing she's now safe and well taken care of in her furever home now!
If you are a rescue pet and have a story to tell, do
email me and i'll get in touch with you for an exclusive interview so you can share your happy tail with the rest of the world.
p.s. I'm feeling abit needy now, after interviewing Lulu!! Gonna go to S and demand for a big bear hug now!!!
